My ancestors Claiborne John Payne and his father Samuel Payne owned a plantation (possibly named Payne's Grove) around Spring Hill, Alabama, just north of Greenville, from about 1820 through the 1860s.

During the 1840s Samuel Payne ran a blacksmith operation and kept (for several years) a daily ledger of customers and work performed. I recently gained access (from a family member) to a xerox copy of these papers.

I've transcribed the blacksmith activity into a spreadsheet, and then saved to a PDF format. This information is sorted two ways. The Chronological sort lists the ledger by date. The Customer sort lists the ledger by the Customer or Accounts Receivable name, sorted by last name first.

I've tried to retain original spellings, but some of the copy is hard to read. Also, I added columns identifying the Customers by last name first, and adding in their birth years and birth places as researched online.

This blacksmith document I think would be valuable to researchers studying their Butler County, Alabama families from the 1840s...
